The 2022 Southern Ohio PGA College Recruiting Webinar was aimed to help junior golfers and their parents learn more about the process to play college golf. This event, held on November 16, 2022, brought four college coaches from all divisions of the NCAA and a former SOPGA Junior Tour Member together to provide insight to our players and parents on the college recruiting process to find the right fit for their junior.
Panelists:
- Lisa Strom – Ohio State University Head Women’s Golf Coach
- Lauren Grogan – Denison University Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach
- Gip Hoagland, PGA – University of Dayton Head Men’s Golf Coach
- Chris Deibel, PGA – Ohio Dominican University Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach
- Jacob Brownley – Former SOPGA Junior Tour Member, Senior Captain at Ohio Dominican University
Key Takeaways:
“It is really important for juniors to do their research before coming on campus. I have had numerous emails come through calling me ‘Mr. Grogan’. That is where doing the research comes in, that could have been easily avoided and shown me that they did some research.”– Coach Grogan
“2020 and 2021 were the two best teams we have had in program history. It is not a coincidence that those were also our two top performing teams academically. Success and hard work are a habit, not just a one time thing and that shows in the success those two teams had.” – Coach Deibel
“When it comes to starting the process, just go after it. Do your homework, know what you’re looking for, and go do it. You never know what is going to be the deciding factor when it comes to talking to coaches, always be prepared.” – Coach Hoagland
“It is important to know what you are looking for as a STUDENT athlete. Finding the right fit for you can come down to academics as much as it does athletics. Have a good idea of what you want out of your experience and you will be able to find the right fit for you.” – Coach Strom
“Don’t be afraid to start sending emails and be sure to follow up, coaches are very busy. If it isn’t the right fit, the coach will let you know. The worst that they can say is no, there is likely a place out there for everyone to play, just keep trying until you find the fit.” – Jacob Brownley
